When watching Bear athletes compete, the skill and mental focus they have honed in practice is on full dislay. What can be less obvious are the specific areas behind the scenes that an athletics program could use improvement on. This fall, the women’s basketball team recevied a generous matching gift for their Excellence Initiative to help them advance in the areas unseen by fans. Coach Kristen Mattio speaks to the numerous areas this gift will help improve for her team this year and into the future.

Jason Alvine '02 is back with the Bears. The former UNC women's basketball announcer is starting a new season behind the mic as the newest Voice of the Bears, calling football and men’s basketball home games.

District 6 graduate Andrew Alirez never had much of a choice about whether he would be a wrestler, but he did have options about where to compete at the college level. UNC’s program and head coach made that decision easy.

It’s been another historic season of success for the UNC Women’s Basketball team, thanks in large part to senior standout Savannah Smith. According to Smith, she owes her success both on and off the court to hard work, determination and the support of a scholarship.

Every two years the Athletic Hall of Fame at the University of Northern Colorado recognizes the excellence of former players, coaches, teams and support staff. This year Northern Colorado Athletics celebrated the 22nd Hall of Fame class with the addition of five new members on Friday, October 5, 2018. The 2018 class features four student-athletes and one coach from five different sports.

Although they live more than 1,000 miles apart, and their time as UNC students is separated by more than 30 years, Alumnus Richard Smith, BS ’81, and Sophomore Darren DeLaCroix have more in common than meets the eye.

Some of UNC Volleyball’s legendary line of coaches weigh in on the program’s foundation, recipe for success and what makes it so unique to northern Colorado. A season-long celebration kicks off this month with the Volleyball Alumni Weekend and 50th Anniversary Celebration event.

Love for the game of tennis and the theatre, coupled with a desire to make a difference, led heart surgeon Dr. Ken Richards and wife Beth Richards to establish student scholarships funding their passions.
